Remember Bel Canto? Ann Patchett has done it again. Dr. Marina Singh, a Research Scientist with a Minnesota-based pharmaceutical, is on a search for the answers to her colleague's death. Her search takes her to the Amazon where dangers are everywhere, from the snakes underfoot to the spear-throwing cannibals. There she faces her own past as she confronts her mentor who is on a quest to produce a drug with a very unusual side effect. This is a thrill ride through the jungle you shouldn't pass up!
A customer told me I had to read this book, and she was certainly right! Set in the 1950's turbulent South, this is a story of a family and their relationships with each other and their black maid. Told by the younger daughter, this is a coming-of-age tale, beautifully written and multi-layered. If you liked The Help (and who didn't?) this book is for you.
Do you need a good loud laugh? Read I Think I Love You. Told mostly by Welsh tween Petra, the novel focuses on her obsession with David Cassidy and fitting in with the "popular" girls, who really aren't very nice. But author Pearson makes sure they're very funny.
Now Petra is facing 40 and a divorce. Cleaning out her mother's closet, she finds a letter announcing her as the winner of a trip to America to meet David Cassidy. Eighteen years later, Petra wants to claim it.
Not only laugh-out-loud funny, Pearson writes so insightfully about teenage, and later, motherhood angst. A gem of a book.
